When you’ve finally reached retirement and are looking forward to years of relaxation and fun, expending extra energy worrying about your teeth is probably the last thing you want to do. Some patients in their retirement years will need to consider dentures, dental implants or other dentistry appliances, but it is totally possible to maintain a healthy smile as a senior citizen.
Diseases that are unrelated to your teeth can begin to affect your oral health.

The first step is maintaining good oral hygiene habits. Brush at least twice daily, floss daily, and avoid sticky, sweet foods like soda and candy. Visit your dentist for routine cleanings, and don’t smoke. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid wearing away the enamel on your teeth.

Monitor your calcium intake. Being calcium deficient can lead to several dental issues, while having the appropriate amount of calcium can strengthen the alveolar process (the bony ridge that supports teeth in their socket). Watch your diet and eat high calcium foods, or talk with your doctor about taking a calcium supplement.

Diseases that are unrelated to your teeth can begin to affect your oral health. Acid reflux or GERD can lead to an erosion of tooth enamel as the stomach acid sits on your teeth. Heart disease and diabetes, which both affect circulation, are known to contribute to periodontal disease. Make sure you’re getting an annual physical with your doctor, and take his advice when it comes to managing these illnesses.

Your dental history will also contribute to the health of your smile in retirement years. For example, if you have had bridgework done in the past, the surrounding teeth may be weakened. Tooth decay can occur if food particles become lodged in the bridgework. If you have had bridgework or veneers, talk with your dentist about how to care for them properly.

Good overall health and proper oral hygiene will go far in making sure you keep a healthy smile as you age. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Carolyn Kupka, serving Boulder CO, to schedule your next dental exam.

Root Canal therapy is a common dental procedure used by a dentist to preserve an otherwise healthy tooth in the event that the tooth’s root, or ‘pulp’, becomes diseased or damaged. Root canal therapy belongs to a branch of dentistry called endodontics.

A tooth’s pulp may be removed for one of two main reasons: infection and damage. With infection, an unfilled cavity allows tooth decay to erode the enamel and dentine layers of the tooth until it reaches a root canal, where it can attack and infect the pulp. If the pulp becomes infected, antibiotics have little effect on the infection, and so the usual treatment is to remove the pulp entirely.

In the case of damage to the pulp, this can occur due to trauma to the tooth, during regular dental treatments such as fillings, or during preparation for other procedures, such as fixed bridge treatment.

To determine whether a patient requires root canal therapy, a dentist will carry out a range of examinations and X-rays to determine the health of the tooth and the pulp.

Root canal treatment is typically performed under local anaesthetic. The dentist segregates the tooth by placing a thin rubber shield, called a ‘dam’, around the affected tooth before making a hole in the tooth and removing the dead or diseased pulp.

Then, the dentist will measure the root canals using X-rays or an electronic device called an Apex locator. Dentists measure the root canals in order to ensure they remove all of the pulp, and also how much filling material will be required to seal the tooth.

Once all the pulp has been removed, the dentist will usually rinse the tooth with some antiseptic to treat existing infection. Then the pulp cavity is cleaned before filling and sealing the root canals with a putty-like material called ‘gutta percha’.

Finally, the treated tooth is usually fitted with a dental crown which protects the filling and tooth, and conceals the root canal therapy. Pain-killing medication may be given for some patients, although the root canal treatment is relatively pain-free, and special care should be taken for some time afterwards not to bump, knock, or bite on the treated tooth.

A regular dental hygiene regime should be used to care for the tooth in the same way as others, and regular check-ups should be undertaken to ensure there are no problems. Call our Boulder dental office at 303-444-2884 to schedule your visit.

In the past, dental fillings were usually carried out using metal amalgam fillings; a mercury-based alloy made up of silver, tin and copper. Although an effective solution for use in dental fillings due to it being cheap, durable, and easy to use; metal amalgam fillings can also be unsightly and in recent years they have seen a drop in their use by cosmetic dentists.

Instead, cosmetic dentists are increasingly utilizing natural, tooth colored fillings – also known as composite resin fillings as the basis for dental fillings.

These fillings offer a range of benefits when compared to standard metal amalgam fillings.

Some of the benefits of tooth-colored fillings include:

A more natural appearance – tooth-colored fillings appear more natural in the mouth and so are less noticeable than metal amalgam fillings

Increased durability – tooth-colored fillings are slower to erode and break down than metal amalgam fillings

Reduced tooth sensitivity – although metal amalgam fillings can seal cavities, the filled tooth remains sensitive to hot and cold substances; composite resin fillings are less sensitive

Provide greater strength to the tooth – unlike metal amalgam fillings, which are generally tightly packed into a cavitiy, and so can work loose; composite resin fillings are bonded to the tooth, providing additional strength

Proper sealing of the tooth – composite resin fillings can fully seal the area between tooth and filling, preventing decay from getting into the cavity

Also, perhaps most important, is the fact that metal amalgam fillings have been linked to an array of health problems, both physical and psychological. Over time, there is a possibility that the mercury contained in metal amalgam fillings can leak into the patient’s mouth, and so can bring about more serious health issues. Of course, not everyone who has metal fillings suffers from health problems – in fact, the chances of becoming affected is very small, and most people with metal fillings live out their lives with no problems.

However, for anyone worried about the potential risks, or just want to restore the natural look of their smile, then cosmetic dentists can replace existing metal amalgam fillings in a patient’s teeth with tooth-colored fillings; so helping to provide all the benefits of composite resin fillings while also restoring the patient’s natural smile to former glories, as well as contributing to the patient’s overall health and well-being.

To learn more about the benefits of tooth-colored fillings and to schedule your consultation in Boulder CO, contact the office of Dr. Carolyn Kupka today.

It’s a natural instinct for people to look their best. Whether it is wearing nice clothes, spending time doing hair and makeup, or even spending time at a spa, we want to look and feel special.

But sadly, this ethos doesn’t always progress to our teeth and smile, which although we may maintain good dental hygiene, isn’t always what it could be due to surface damage on our teeth. This can lead us to feel subconscious of any imperfection our teeth may have.

Any dentist will – quite rightly – stress the importance of a good dental hygiene regime to help keep teeth healthy and strong. But over time, and as we get older, our teeth may be subject to any manner of damage-inducing incidents.

A common misconception among dental patients is that a damaged tooth may require to be removed. However, this isn’t always the case, as although treating the surface of the tooth may be problematic (perhaps due to pre-existing treatments, such as fillings or root canal treatment) the root of the tooth may yet be completely healthy, and so your dentist may suggest fitting a dental crown as an alternative treatment.

There are a number of benefits to having a dental crown:

They conceal the entire visible area of the tooth, hiding any unsightly damage.

They help strengthen the existing tooth structure and bring stability to surrounding teeth.

They are long-lasting and can out-live the natural lifespan of the damaged tooth.

They are more robust than dentures, and provide a better aesthetic appearance to the patient.

You can continue to carry out your dental hygiene regime as you previously did; with dental crowns there is no need for special care or instructions as is the case with dentures.

Such is the technology associated with today’s dental crowns that they can even be color-matched to ensure a perfect fit with the rest of your smile. This means that those close to you won’t even be able to tell the difference between your real teeth and the dental crown – unless you tell them!

Of course, dental crowns may not be for everyone, so it’s always wise to consult with your dentist who can advise on the benefits and disadvantages of the treatment.

To learn more about dental crowns and to schedule your consultation in Boulder, please contact the office of Dr. Carolyn Kupka at 303-444-2884 today.

Although there are many types of cancer, oral cancer is one which is perhaps lesser known but no less dangerous if left untreated.
Although there are many types of cancer, oral cancer is one which is perhaps lesser known but no less dangerous if left untreated.

Many of the symptoms of oral cancer closely mirror those of other more common mouth complaints, so while you may have one or more symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily indicate a cancer. However, if in any doubt, speak to your dentist as soon as possible.

Some early symptoms of oral cancer include:

Red or white patches appearing around the mouth tissue

Difficulty in chewing or swallowing

Persistent sores or lesions which are reluctant to heal

Any lumps, swelling or thickening of the gums, cheeks or lips, or any part of the mouth

Any unexplained bleeding from the mouth

A continual feeling of something being trapped in the throat

Tenderness or numbness of the tongue, gums, or other part of the mouth

This is not an exhaustive list of symptoms and any unexplained, abnormal or sudden changes that occur within the mouth or surrounding areas should be referred to your dentist for evaluation.

While you can always consult a doctor if you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is worth bearing in mind that a dentist is trained to not only examine and care for the health of your teeth and gums, but also the whole oral cavity; and so your dentist may be a better choice for the early diagnosis and treatment of oral-related issues than your doctor.

Figures by the Oral Cancer Foundation suggested that some 37,000 Americans would be diagnosed with oral cancer, and a similar number in future years. In many cases the cancer would be well advanced at the time of detection, and as a result, the Foundation estimated the mortality rate from oral cancer at around 50%.

Statistically, regular smokers and drinkers of alcohol are more at risk and oral cancer is typically more likely to affect middle-aged and older men than women. Each day, there are around 100 people who are diagnosed with oral cancer in the United States alone.

With numbers such as these, it’s important that oral cancer, just like any cancer, is diagnosed early in its lifecycle for the best chance of successful treatment and so in the event of unknown discomfort or sensations in your mouth, a visit to your dentist could be a potential lifesaver.

To schedule your next exam and oral cancer screening, contact the office of Dr. Carolyn Kupka in the Westminster CO area.

Unfortunately, some people choose to neglect a routine trip to their dentist because of dental anxiety or dental phobia. This compromises both their oral and over-all health. With the help of sedation dentistry, you will be able to receive your dental needs without the trauma.

Sedation is the process that can be used to create a relaxed and calm state with the use of sedatives. It gives those with anxiety disorder or apprehensive individuals the chance to enjoy a relaxing experience and obtain necessary dental treatment. Sedative drugs like anti-anxiety medication and nitrous oxide help by inducing a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for the patient with a dental phobia.

In the past, intravenous, or IV sedation, was commonly used. At present, it is still preferred by some. Sedatives are delivered into the blood vessels by way of injection into the hand or arm of the patient. This is administered by a trained professional and protects the patient from possible discomfort where tedious procedures are involved.

Oral sedation is often the preferred approach that is practiced by most dentists. It is an appealing technique for anxious patients who are in need of oral care. Sedation dentistry creates a comfortable experience that eases the patient’s fears and provides him or her with a successful dental experience. Oral sedation allows the patient to stay conscious throughout the treatment so that he or she can comply with the dentist’s instructions.

It should be noted that a local anesthetic will still be applied to the area to be treated in the cases of surgical procedures. The patient will not feel any discomfort since the sedative will be administered before the treatment begins. Regardless of what type of sedative is used, the patient will be able to go through the dental visit without any apprehension. This may also provide the anxious individual with positive motivation and hopefully help lessen his or her trauma regarding dental treatments.

If you have put off important dental work due to anxiety, please contact our Boulder Colorado office and learn how sedation dentistry can help take the edge off.

There are many habits and factors that lead to the breakdown of our teeth. There are numerous cosmetic dentistry solutions available to restore your smile. Many patients are turning to porcelain veneers as an affordable and convenient way to get the smile of their dreams.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells created from material that is meant to simulate the look and feel of natural tooth enamel. Veneers are bonded to the area and cover the frontal surface of the patient’s teeth. Porcelain veneers improve the aesthetic appearance of the dentition. A cosmetic dentist will usually recommend this sort of treatment to people with discolored teeth, uneven dentition, worn down or chipped enamel, irregularly shaped dentition and those who have unsightly diastemas or gaps between their teeth.
Porcelain veneers are thin shells created from material that is meant to simulate the look and feel of natural tooth enamel.

Before the treatment can begin, your dentist will assess your dentition. Your dental history will be reviewed to determine if you are a good candidate for this restorative treatment. Bite impressions and dental x-rays will also be taken. This will help the dentist figure out how to improve your teeth’s appearance without sacrificing the balance of your bite.

The beauty of custom-made porcelain veneers is that the patient will be able to choose the shape, size and color of the shells. Your cosmetic dentist will also be able to help you select the perfect shape and color to compliment your facial structure. You can bring pictures of the smiles that you covet to help your dentist understand how you would like your future smile to look like.

The treatment consists of two visits. During the first visit, a thin layer will be removed from the tooth’s surface to make room for the porcelain shells. To reduce the possibility of discomfort, a local anesthetic will be applied to the area. Bite impressions will be taken and temporary veneers will be put in place while the permanent veneers are fabricated. You will receive your new custom-made veneers during your final visit and your cosmetic dentist will give detailed instructions about care and maintenance.

If you are considering dental veneers or would like more information, please contact the office of Carolyn Kupka in Boulder at 303-444-2884.

Fortunately, this is an easy problem to fix. Don’t let stained teeth keep you from enjoying life. Dr. Carolyn Kupka, your cosmetic dentist serving Boulder, can help restore the natural color of your teeth so you can relax and smile again.

Treatments for Stained Teeth

The best treatment for stained teeth depends upon the type and severity of the discoloration. In general, there are two types of tooth discoloration: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic discoloration affects only the outer layers of the tooth enamel, while intrinsic discoloration affects all layers of the teeth and is more difficult to treat.

Extrinsic discoloration is usually caused by exposure to foods, beverages and other agents that cause staining, including:

Nicotine

Fruit juices

Coffee and tea

Dark-colored foods

Natural wear and tear

Intrinsic staining is usually due to exposure to specific drugs or to excessive fluoride, usually while the teeth are developing. Extrinsic staining is generally treated with teeth whitening. More severe staining, particularly intrinsic staining, is more effectively treated with dental veneers.

Teeth Whitening and How it Works

Dr. Kupka can perform teeth whitening in her office. Using BriteSmile teeth whitening, your teeth can be lightened dramatically in a single, hour-long session.

With BriteSmile teeth whitening, a gel is applied to your teeth, then activated with a special light. Your lips, tongue and gums are protected during this procedure to prevent irritation that can result from contact with the whitening gel. The gel is usually removed and reapplied two or three times during each whitening session, allowing it to penetrate the outer layers of the tooth and eliminate the discoloration that results from extrinsic staining.

If you are self-conscious about your stained teeth, teeth whitening or veneers can restore your confidence in your smile. To find out what treatment is the best option for your discolored teeth, please contact the office of Dr. Kupka at 303-444-2884 for a consultation.

Loss of teeth is more than a cosmetic consideration. Although missing teeth can lead to self-consciousness, it can also cause systemic problems with your dental health. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to move out of position, leading to problems such as misalignment or even temporomandibular joint disorder. With dental implants from your Boulder dentist, however, you can restore your smile and keep your other teeth properly situated and healthy.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide a permanent solution for missing teeth. They consist of a root portion as well as a portion that replaces the visible part of the tooth. Unlike dentures, they are not removable, and they do not move in the mouth. With proper care, dental implants will last many years, keeping your smile intact and your natural teeth in their proper position.

Dental implants are placed in two stages. First, the root portion of the implant is placed. Made of titanium, the root bonds to the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This process takes several weeks, after which the visible portion of the implant is added. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth.

Advantages to Dental Implants

Dental implants have grown rapidly in popularity largely because they offer numerous advantages over traditional dentures. These advantages include:

Implants are permanent

Implants do not have to be removed for cleaning

Implants help stimulate the jawbone, preventing deterioration

Implants look just like your natural teeth

Placement of implants is considered a surgical procedure, so any precautions you would take with any surgery should also be taken if you are having implants placed. Be sure to consult with your implant dentist to determine if you are a good candidate for implants. This is particularly important if you have worn dentures in the past, because you might have experienced bone loss in the jaw and might require bone grafts before implants can be placed successfully.

The temporomandibular joint, also referred to as the TMJ, is the joint where the lower jaw meets the upper jaw at the temporal bone in the skull. This joint often suffers from improper alignment, leading to a variety of symptoms that can be difficult to trace to their source. If you need help diagnosing problems with your TMJ in Boulder, our office can help diagnose and treat your symptoms as well as their cause.

Causes of TMJ Disorder

The most common cause of TMJ is misalignment of the teeth. When the teeth are not properly aligned, the joint can be pushed out of its proper position. TMJ can also occur due to habitual grinding or clenching, although these actions can also be a symptom of TMJ caused by misalignment.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder can include:

Headaches

Earache

Pain in the jaw

Clicking in the jaw

Pain in the neck, shoulders or upper back

These symptoms can occur due to other problems, so be sure to consult with your doctor as well as your dentist if you are experiencing any of these possible side effects of TMJ disorder.

Treatment of TMJ Disorder

Treating TMJ disorder can be complex. Advances in technology allow your dentist to determine the optimal alignment of your teeth. 3-D jaw tracking determines where the imbalances exist that must be corrected to alleviate your symptoms. The muscles in the jaw are then relaxed using a TENS machine, which helps the dentist see how your jaw and teeth should be aligned. An orthotic device is custom made for you to wear in order to keep your jaw in the appropriate position.

For long-term correction, your dentist might recommend orthodontic treatment or treatments such as inlays, onlays or veneers to fine-tune your bite and the way your upper and lower teeth interact with each other. Optimizing your bite and alignment and ensuring that your teeth stay properly aligned can provide considerable relief from the symptoms of TMJ disorder.

If you are suffering from TMJ disorder, or experiencing any symptoms that might indicate TMJ disorder, please contact our offices for an appointment or a consultation.
